Guernsey staff undertake Everest climbing challenge

25 Apr 2023

A group of Saffery Trust staff and family members have raised £560.45 by taking part in the Le Murier 2023 Everest Challenge.

The three-day event saw teams undertake one-hour sessions on a climbing wall in a collective effort to scale 8,848 metres, which is the equivalent height of Mount Everest.

Funds raised through team sponsorship will be used to fund residential trips for pupils at the island’s Special Education School, which will contribute to their efforts in completing The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Saffery Trust entered two teams into the challenge, which was celebrating its 30th annual event. Most of the teams were climbing novices but said they would be keen to take part again next year.

Assistant Manager and Corporate Social Responsibility Team Co-lead, Joe Cardoso-Smale, took part with his husband, Filipe.

I had never been on a climbing wall before, so wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was fantastic. There was a great atmosphere with music blaring, bright UV lights and guides on hand to assist us,” he said.

Supporting our local community is an important part of the Saffery Trust ethos, and this was an excellent way to involve our family in raising funds for an excellent cause. We will definitely look to enter teams again next year and will hopefully be able to raise even more money.”

The efforts of the Staff and their families were recognised and rewarded, having their fundraising total topped up by an additional donation from the Saffery Trust Guernsey office.
