An intern’s journey at Saffery
Peter Ashiagbor is currently an Accounts Assistant at Saffery in High Wycombe, while studying for a degree in Accounting and Finance at Buckinghamshire New University. With aspirations of becoming a trainee at the firm after graduation, he shares his experiences working at the firm and offers valuable insights on how to make the most of an internship.
Why did you decide that you’d like to work in an accountancy firm?
From a young age, I’ve been drawn to the idea of becoming a Chartered Accountant, specifically through the ACCA or ACA qualifications. My natural curiosity about the world of finance and numbers fuelled my decision to pursue a career in accountancy. Working in a leading accountancy firm seemed like the best way to turn this passion into a career.
Why did you decide to join Saffery as an intern?
I was fortunate enough to meet some of Saffery’s incredible team at the Bucks Skill Show during my search for an internship. At that time, I was looking for an opportunity to gain real-world experience, and the firm’s offer of an internship was a perfect fit. What began as an internship quickly turned into a part-time job, which has been a fantastic learning experience.
What is your focus at Saffery? What aspects have appealed so far?
I’ve been involved in a wide range of tasks including audits, accounts preparation, and independent examinations of charities. I’ve had the opportunity to experience a wide spectrum of accountancy work, and the diversity of tasks has kept me engaged. Even in my part-time role now, I continue to build on this experience. It’s fascinating to see how businesses are structured and organised, and I learn something new every day.
What do you hope to achieve at the firm?
Saffery offers an insightful window into the world of accounting and business advisory roles, and my goal is to continue building my knowledge and skills here. I’m focused on learning as much as I can during my time at Saffery hopefully creating value at every turn. I’m also excited to re-join the firm, as a graduate trainee, later this year.
Could you give some top tips to help others adjust from school or university to the workplace?
- Ask loads of questions. No one expects you to know everything as an intern or a trainee. It’s important to be open to learning, ask questions, and challenging yourself is the best way to do that.
- Embrace additional learning. Be curious about industry trends and proactive about learning new things.
- Don’t be hard on yourself. It’s normal to take time to grasp the fundamentals of your role. The most important thing is showing up as your best self each day and putting in the effort. Be patient with your growth.
What’s been your highlight so far at Saffery?
One of the best moments I’ve had so far was during a team event. We had a fun day of paintball and laser tag, which was a brilliant way to unwind and bond with my colleagues. It’s memories like these that make working here feel special.
How should an intern make the most of their experience?
Internships are an excellent opportunity to learn, and to make the most of it, it’s important to give it your all. Ask questions, take notes, and always try to be thorough. Every task is a chance to develop your skills, understanding and build up your network of contacts.
Can you tell me a bit about the social side of Saffery? What do you like most?
Saffery’s work environment is more relaxed than I initially expected from a corporate entity. It’s a great balance of professionalism and fun, making it a place where people genuinely enjoy working.
Why do you think Saffery is a good employer?
I believe Saffery is an excellent employer because the managers are committed to supporting your growth. They’re patient and provide honest feedback. It’s the ideal environment for anyone who’s eager to learn and grow in their career.
